A (maybe) final reading at Reykjavík Poetics

Last night I read two short pieces at what might be my final attendance at a Reykjavík Poetics event.

Reykjavík Poetics has been such a big part of my year in Iceland. Started in mid-2023 by author Ewa Marcinek with the support of Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature, Reykjavík Poetics is a sort of organisation/event series with two main elements: RVK Open, an open mic series of events, and the curated Reykjavík Poetics events, which draw together writers and other talented creatives around themes and issues.

From an audience member attending Reykjavík Poetics #7 (an open mic event before the RVK Open series was established), through to a participant and even a Board member, I was very quickly wrapped up in the creative and literary community thanks to these events. What always struck me as special about them were the openness and willingness for readers of all types to participate, regardless the language they spoke, their experience as writers and performers, or their genre or style.

I read two pieces. The first, Survival Tips, was published in my zine, Iceland in Other Words. It's a short story of a person trying to fit into Icelandic society by attending a choir, only to find himself disconnected. The second, Traces, has been accepted in the forthcoming issue of Ós – the Journal (more on Ós Pressan here).

To listen to my readings, and the readings of all the amazing Board members of Reykjavík Poetics (sans Ewa, who was unfortunately unable to make it), click here or click my recording below.
